Juaneda Hospitals launches a unit of biological, integrative, and regenerative medicine

Juaneda Hospitals has inaugurated a pioneering Unit of Biological, Integrative, and Regenerative Medicine (UBIR) under the leadership of Dr. Alberto Hernández, an expert in this field.

Many of the illnesses we suffer from result from undiagnosed causes that persist over time, leading to pharmacological treatments aimed at addressing symptoms without addressing the root cause of the disease. For instance, environmental factors can play a significant role in diseases such as cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, infertility, insomnia, asthma, or chronic bronchiolitis, among many others.

Society is increasingly demanding individualized, personalized, and holistic medicine with a comprehensive approach and therapies designed to support and reinforce the body's natural defense and healing mechanisms.

At Juaneda Hospitals, we embrace this burgeoning field of medicine with the goal of enhancing our patients' quality of life by focusing on the root causes of their conditions.

What is Biological Medicine?

Biological medicine is a type of medical practice that employs treatments and measures to enhance the body's natural mechanisms for preventing and curing diseases or improving patients' symptoms and quality of life.

Integrative biological medicine complements and combines the principles of conventional medical knowledge with those of evidence-based natural or biological medicine.

Which Patients Benefit from Biological Medicine?

This form of medicine is suitable for most patients, both for prevention and the treatment of chronic diseases. Our mission is "Your Well-being." As Dr. Hernández emphasizes, "If you have a medical issue, come visit us, and we will find a solution for you."

In this new unit at Juaneda Hospitals, we develop specific health programs focusing on cardiovascular, respiratory, neurodegenerative, chronic inflammatory, rheumatological, autoimmune diseases, and conditions resulting in chronic fatigue and pain.

We address the medical problem comprehensively and seek the best evidence-based therapeutic options to complement conventional patient treatments.

What is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine is a branch of biological medicine and one of the most significant advances in modern medicine. It centers around the body's natural ability to regenerate and repair damaged tissues by developing therapies that promote and accelerate this process. It proves highly beneficial for patients with chronic pain, osteoarthritis, and osteomuscular injuries, allowing damaged tissues to repair naturally.

Some treatment techniques in Regenerative Medicine include:

a) Stem Cell Therapy:

Regenerative therapies utilizing mesenchymal stem cells aim to repair damaged tissues, such as cartilage in the knee, hip, or other joints. These therapies are recommended by Juaneda UBIR when the damaged tissue can still be saved before resorting to prosthetic surgery or in cases of chondropathy causing pain and functional impairment. The procedure typically lasts about 45 minutes, with relatively short recovery time due to its minimally invasive nature. It is simple, relatively painless, and eliminates the need for hospitalization, as there are no complications or adverse effects.

b) PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) Therapy - Intraosseous and Intra-articular:

PRP is a biological, autologous, non-toxic, and non-allergenic product obtained from a blood sample, much like a regular blood test. After obtaining blood, the sample is centrifuged to create PRP, composed of elements from the blood, including growth factors and proteins that, when infiltrated into damaged tissue, stimulate the presence of reparative cells at the site of tissue damage.

c) Hyaluronic Acid Treatment:

The administration of hyaluronic acid is a Regenerative Medicine technique that, when applied to a joint, has two primary functions: it stimulates the joint's own cells to produce better hyaluronic acid, nourishing joint cartilage and slowing its degeneration. It also improves joint fluid viscosity, rejuvenating the joint.

d) Prolotherapy:

Prolotherapy is a regenerative medicine technique that repairs tissues by injecting specific substances, like sugar alcohols, into the injured area. The result is increased blood flow to the area, allowing injured or damaged tissues to heal naturally, as it provides essential cells and growth factors for stimulation of healing.

Ultimately, prolotherapy promotes natural body healing by producing new collagen that repairs and strengthens damaged connective tissue. Once the tendon or ligament tissue is repaired, the joints regain stability, and pain resolves.

What Benefits Can Be Expected from Regenerative Medicine?

Among the many benefits of regenerative medicine are:

• Improved joint function.

• Delayed need for prosthetic surgery.

• Increased endogenous hyaluronic acid formation.

• Enhanced joint pain relief.

• Promotion of self-healing and repair of affected tissue.

One of the technologies incorporated into this new unit is Thermography as a diagnostic tool for diseases.

Thermography is a non-invasive diagnostic technique, performed without contact, which, unlike conventional diagnostic techniques, doesn't aim to identify anatomical alterations but rather physiological ones.

Essentially, what it detects are temperature changes on the body's surface, i.e., on the skin. These temperature variations typically serve as an alert for illness or the risk of illness.

In which medical fields is thermography used?

It is widely employed in sports medicine for injury prevention and monitoring, as well as in the field of chronic pain. For example, in the sports context, teams like Real Madrid, Atlético de Madrid, or Real Zaragoza use this technology as you can see through these links:

Among the primary benefits of thermography in sports, it allows the detection of muscular imbalances, prevents, and monitors muscular, joint, or tendon injuries.

Another valuable application of thermography is in breast disease. Thanks to technological advances, it is now a complementary tool for conventional tests in breast cancer diagnosis. Since it emits no radiation and is a contactless procedure, it is an option women should consider for breast disease screening and follow-up.

Thermography is also useful in many other medical areas and enables the detection of vascular, rheumatologic, dermatological, thyroid, and other health issues.

In our Unit, we utilize the most advanced thermography technology and interpret the results with artificial intelligence software, ensuring a much more precise diagnosis. Our diagnostic system is validated.

Pioneering Biological Medicine at Juaneda Hospitals

Juaneda Hospitals becomes a pioneer by launching its Biological, Integrative, and Regenerative Medicine Unit, following the path of other major Spanish and international hospitals. This unit is inaugurated under the leadership of Dr. Alberto Hernández.

Dr. Hernández, in addition to being a physiotherapist, holds a medical degree from Complutense University of Madrid and earned his doctorate "cum laude" in the Department of Surgery at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. He is an expert in thermography and chronic pain, having published several books and scientific articles. He is a member of several scientific societies and a recognized authority in the field of Integrative & Regenerative Biological Medicine.

With the introduction of this innovative unit at Juaneda Hospitals, Dr. Alberto Hernández believes it is "a highly promising project that offers hope to many chronic patients who do not respond to pharmaceuticals or conventional treatments."

The primary goal is to improve the quality of life for patients, “offering them an alternative place for treatment, aimed at reversing, or halting the progression of their ailments, allowing them to live better lives.”
