Biological medicine: prevention and innovative therapies

Many of the diseases we suffer from are caused by undiagnosed factors that persist over time, with pharmacological treatments only addressing symptoms, without eliminating the disease's root cause. For instance, environmental factors can significantly influence diseases like cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, infertility, insomnia, asthma, or chronic bronchiolitis, among many others.

In this new unit at Juaneda Hospitals, we employ diagnostic techniques that predict the risk of developing a disease or injury. Thus, in addition to curative treatments, "the other part, as Dr. Alberto Hernández explains, focuses on prevention and innovative therapies to avoid falling ill," particularly in patients over 40 years of age.

Detoxification Therapy

Many chronic diseases are directly related to environmental pollution, including inhaled toxins and heavy metals that accumulate in our bodies, among others.

Through detoxification programs like chelation therapy, we cleanse tissues and organs of these harmful substances. "

At Mount Sinai Hospital in the United States," Dr. Hernandez explains, "chelation therapy has been found to benefit patients with coronary issues who have suffered a heart attack, increasing their chances of recovery, reducing relapses, and improving their quality of life and life expectancy."

Chelation therapy can also be effective in treating neurodegenerative diseases, memory issues, and sclerosis. "By clearing all toxic substances from the body, we can provide specific treatments that enhance the quality of life for these patients," Dr. Alberto Hernández affirms.

For cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy, chelation therapy helps eliminate toxic substances from the body, facilitating a better recovery.

Advanced Diagnostic Tests

One of the fields in medicine that has advanced significantly, as Dr. Hernández recalls, is genetics. Thanks to these advancements, it's now possible to understand at a genetic level why diseases develop and what predisposing factors contribute to their occurrence. "Once we know the cause of a disease, we can modify the patient's health habits to prevent it."

A sample of hair, urine, or saliva can provide comprehensive information about the risks of developing Alzheimer's, cancer, chronic fatigue, and more. "This information is crucial for prevention and modification: the former to prevent the disease from developing, and the latter to enhance the patient's quality of life by utilizing all available biological avenues."

Another cutting-edge technology included in the unit led by Dr. Hernandez is thermography. This non-invasive diagnostic method uses an infrared camera to capture images of the body.

In recent years, thermography has been widely used in elite sports to predict the risk of sports-related injuries in athletes. It also "allows for monitoring injuries to determine if a player can safely return to their sport without risking a relapse," Dr. Alberto Hernández explains.

Additionally, thermography serves as a valuable complementary diagnostic method for breast cancer. "We use it alongside conventional tests, utilizing advanced and state-of-the-art devices that incorporate Artificial Intelligence."

Studies presented at oncology conferences have shown that thermography results closely resemble those of mammograms and, in some cases, yield better results. The key difference is that thermography is non-invasive, making it repeatable and suitable for pregnant women, who are also susceptible to breast cancer.

In vascular diseases, thermography plays a crucial role as it can detect vascular abnormalities before a stroke occurs, for example. Combined with therapies like chelation, thermography helps clear arteries of heavy metals and toxic substances, reducing the risk of heart attacks or cerebral strokes.
