1.2 Biography

Dr. Miguel Mesa-Guzmán MD, PhD, FEBTS

Professor Miguel Mesa-Guzmán graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the Health Sciences School of the University of Carabobo, Venezuela (MD). He trained in Thoracic Surgery at the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital and the Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebrón in Barcelona, Spain.

During his training, he spent time at the Institut Mutualiste Montsouris (IMM) in Paris (France) in the Department of Thoracic Surgery with Dr. Gossot, acquiring advanced surgical refinement in minimally invasive thoracic surgery techniques, and also collaborated in the Lung Transplant Program at the Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebrón in Barcelona.

After completing his training, he worked in the Thoracic Surgery Service at the Hospital Universitario Sagrat Cor in Barcelona and carried out two Clinical Fellowships in the United Kingdom, in the Thoracic Surgery Service at Nottingham City Hospital NHS Trust, Nottingham, and at the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital NHS Trust in London for 3 years.

He obtained the European Board Certification in Thoracic Surgery (FEBTS) by the European Union of Medical Specialists UEMS and the European Society of Thoracic Surgery (ESTS) in 2014.

He is currently the Director of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Juaneda Clinic in the Balearic Islands and a member of UMICS Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Unit along with Dr. Javier Gallego Poveda and Dr. Diego González-Rivas.

He has been the Director of the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the University Clinic of Navarra, promoting and developing the video-assisted minimally invasive surgery program and the robotic surgical program since his robotic certification in 2018.

He is a Doctor of Philosophy / PhD in Medicine and Surgery with Cum Laude distinction since 2020.

He continued his education as a teaching collaborator for MIR residents at the Faculty of Medicine of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and was an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Navarra. He teaches in various prestigious advanced video thoracoscopy surgery courses around the world.

As a researcher, he has given more than 60 lectures and presentations at national and international conferences. He has participated in 20 articles published in national and international scientific journals and collaborated on 2 book chapters.

His interests focus on uniportal minimally invasive surgery (U-VATS + U-RATS), quality in postoperative management of thoracic patients, enhanced recovery, lung cancer, lung cancer screening in at-risk patients, diagnostic biomarkers, mediastinal tumors, chest wall deformities, hyperhidrosis, among others.

He received the SEPAR Patient Award given by the Spanish Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery and the Extraordinary Doctorate Award in Medicine, awarded by the University of Navarra in 2020
