Say goodbye to excess weight permanently
More than 10% of the population in the Balearic Islands suffers from obesity, and 1 in 4 people is overweight. These statistics were derived from a study conducted by the Spanish Society of Cardiology in 2022.
Excess weight brings about numerous health complications, including respiratory, cardiovascular, metabolic, digestive, sexual, infectious, among others, and of course, psychosocial issues. It is said that a person who has always been thin cannot understand the suffering of an obese individual or their struggle to lose weight.
At Juaneda Hospitals, we understand this conflict. Our Obesity Unit is prepared to advise and help resolve weight problems from a multidisciplinary perspective. Endocrinologists, obesity and digestive surgeons, endoscopic gastroenterologists, clinical psychologists, nutritionists, and dietitians comprise a highly specialized and experienced team.
The First Changes You Need to Make, No Matter What
It has been said countless times, but it remains true: a patient with obesity needs to change their eating habits and lifestyle. At the Juaneda Hospitals Obesity Unit, we work to achieve four essential transformations:
The patient needs to learn how to eat and change their eating habits.
A healthier and more active lifestyle involves regular physical exercise.
Changing behavior towards food: our experts conduct specific cognitive-behavioral therapy for each case. The goal is for the patient to take control of their weight in their life.
Bariatric techniques and pharmacological strategies.
Do I Have to Undergo Surgery to Lose Weight?
It depends on many factors, but one of the most important is the Body Mass Index (BMI), a formula that uses weight and height to calculate body fat. Typically, a person with a BMI of 40 or higher is a candidate for weight loss surgery, but specialists may consider surgery for an adult with a BMI of 35 or higher who has a medical condition related to obesity or who has been trying to lose weight under supervision for six consecutive months.
There are four types of surgical treatment for obesity: intragastric balloon, which is placed via endoscopy; gastric bypass; adjustable gastric band; and gastric sleeve.
While it is true that diet and exercise are the most reliable ways to lose weight, data shows that only 4% of patients who try to lose weight this way succeed in the long term.
Healthy eating and lifestyle habits are crucial. Therefore, any obesity treatment is accompanied by monitoring and guidance, whether undergoing surgery in severe cases or relying on diet and exercise in cases of mild weight loss.
In both cases, the most important aspect is not the process itself, be it surgery or diet, but the patient's reeducation. The patient must embrace a new life in which they cannot repeat past mistakes.
The professionals in the Obesity Unit will not only help achieve the best results but will also work to ensure they are permanent.
