Juaneda: the importance of a humanised birth
Medicine is evolving by leaps and bounds and, without a doubt, obstetrics is one of the disciplines that has changed the most over the last twenty years.
Years ago, when most births took place at home, the risk of something going wrong was very high, there was a lot of dystocia - abnormalities in the development of labour - and a lot of pathology.
Everything changed when both mothers and their families began to demand more security. At that key moment for obstetrics, all births were transferred to hospitals and, with the aim of reducing mortality and morbidity, they began to be treated as if they were pathological. So childbirth became medicalised.
What does this mean? Well, all births were treated in the same way. And although the mortality rate went down, the most human part of childbirth was lost along the way: the emotion, the accompaniment, the warmth and the listening. The closeness with mothers and families was lost.
It was at this point that professionals in the sector decided to reverse the situation and midwives, the gateway to childbirth for mothers, decided to start lowering the threshold, eliminating medicalisation and adapting each pregnancy to the needs and conditions of both mother and baby. Personalised births in which every process guarantees the safety and wellbeing of the mother and foetus. In addition to introducing families and couples into the equation so that mothers feel accompanied.
Currently, after years of work and evolution, at the Juaneda Group there is a low level of medicalisation and we try to ensure that all deliveries are as minimally instrumentalised as possible and, thanks to physiological work in which we allow the birth to evolve by itself, we have managed to reduce the number of caesarean sections in the Balearic Islands considerably.
Less instrumentalised and medicalised births, as well as being beneficial for the mother and her postpartum, are also beneficial for the babies, who are born with less suffering. The protagonist of childbirth and pregnancy is always the mother, as we believe in the need to listen to her and respect her wishes. We always bring her expectations closer to the reality and evolution of the birth. To achieve this, it is essential to have a cohesive team that always works along the same lines.
Isabel Cascales, coordinator of the delivery unit at Juaneda Miramar, talks about how important it is to respect the mother's wishes when it comes to choosing how she wants the birth to unfold. And, as long as her anatomy and the development of the baby's descent allow us to do so, to respect the position chosen by the mother, placing value on her comfort and wellbeing.
At the Juaneda Group we are aware of how unique and special the moment of giving birth is. For this reason, we want to guarantee you a wonderful experience and that the beginning of this beautiful friendship is at the height of the circumstances.
Juaneda, close to you.
