New Breast Pathology Unit at the Juaneda Miramar

New Breast Pathology Unit at the Juaneda Miramar

With the arrival of 2021, some things may have changed. However, there are some things that remain unshakable. At Juaneda Hospitals, for example, we keep the same goal: to provide the best treatment and the best professionals to our patients.

Undoubtedly, one of the great novelties of 2021 is the new Breast Pathology Unit. Our doctor Pep Vidal, coordinator of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Juaneda Hospitals, has been working there with a team of professionals since September 2019.

As the name suggests, this department is responsible for the treatment of all pathologies of the breast with a special focus on malignant, but of course also benign pathologies.

The main aim of this unit is to speed up the diagnostic process in all women who have either discovered a suspicious lump themselves or who are found to have a suspicious image or lump in their breast during a routine examination. Thanks to a quick diagnosis, we can start the appropriate treatment as soon as possible.

Considering that breast pathologies involve many disciplines, not just gynaecology, one of the great advantages of the new unit is that all these specialists are involved: Gynaecologists, radiologists, oncologists, plastic surgeons, radiotherapists, pathologists and also a psychooncologist.

All these specialties form a circuit in which we can accelerate diagnosis and treatment through the interaction of all specialists.

From the clinical examination to a suspicious image or lump in the breast. From there to a complementary imaging examination (MRI, mammography, etc.) and, if necessary, to a biopsy. From there to pathology to confirm or rule out the malignancy of the biopsy. The findings are then presented to the tumour committee to decide which option is best for each case: surgery in addition to hormone treatment, or, in some cases, chemotherapy with or without surgery.

In addition, the tumour committee is responsible for the follow-up of each case.

The great advantage of a multidisciplinary unit is that patients receive comprehensive care. They have everything centralised and do not have to worry about making appointments with different specialists.

It is important to emphasise that many of the pathologies we find, both benign and malignant, are detected during routine examinations.

Therefore, one cannot overemphasise the importance of two of the basic tests in the examination of women: Pap smear and mammography. Thanks to these two tests, mortality has been remarkably reduced.

At Juaneda Hospitales, we invite you to make an appointment and visit your specialist. A health check and early diagnosis can save many lives.

Juaneda, close to you.
