What is gynecomastia, the treatment most demanded by men?

Plastic surgery is usually associated with women. However, in recent years, more and more men have decided to turn to plastic and cosmetic surgeons to undergo surgery that will allow them to improve their appearance and sense of security.

As in the case of women, breast surgery is also one of the most popular operations for men.

Gynecomastia is the abnormal growth of the breasts in men. According to the SECPRE (Spanish Society of Plastic Surgery), between 40 and 60 percent of men are affected. In addition to the aesthetic consequences, in many cases it can mean a social stigma and impair the sense of security, trust and everyday life of those affected.

Dr. Vicente Camino, plastic and cosmetic surgeon at Juaneda Hospitals, has confirmed that, besides breast augmentation in women, surgery to remove breast tissue in men is becoming more common.

There are many ways to approach this intervention, but usually a small liposuction is performed in the chest area, which allows us to aspirate the adipose tissue with cannulas through small 3 mm incisions.

This process is usually accompanied by a mastectomy, i.e. removal of the mammary gland, as this cannot be removed by liposuction. For this, a small incision is made below the patient's areola, through which the excess mammary gland is removed. The scars that this surgery leaves are minimal and very hidden.

It is a procedure that is usually carried out in a short time (between 1 and 2 hours) and does not pose any major difficulties. The patients are then extremely satisfied and regain their self-confidence and self-esteem.
